1.2 What is the Internet?

Internet is the network formed by the co-operative interconnection of computing networks:

It is a set of computers talking of fiber optics, phone lines, satellite links,
other media.

It is a place where you can talk to your friends and family around the
World.

It is a place to do research for your thesis or a business presentation.

It is unlimited commercial opportunity.

What this Jargon means is that hundreds of connecting networks, usually
Made up of different kinds of computers and different technologies, are put together so smoothly that the individual parts appear to be one network.

These connected networks usually use the TCP/IP (Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol) communications suite.

Protocols are the set of rules that the networks all use to understand each other.

TCP/IP Protocol is a Communication Oriented Protocol.

TCP/IP is present in the network layer.

TCP/IP and the various protocols that are used on the Internet are important
underlying concepts for the Net.
